Based on the Book: Best-Seller Cinema

Monday, October 20 * 7:00 PM

Presented by

Bill Wine, Commonwealth Speaker,

KYW Newsradio Film Critic, and Associate Professor

of Communication, La Salle University

When we see the film version of a book we've read, we just can't help comparing them.  We usually end up preferring either the version on the page or on the screen, knowing that we're comparing a literary apple with a cinematic orange.  In this presentation, Bill Wine will discuss the psychological differences between the reading and viewing experiences.  He'll also talk about indelible written works that have provided the source material for memorable movies, and deal with the insufferable bombs, too.  Bring your preferences, opinions, memories, and questions.

This presentation is a program of the Pennsylvania Humanities Council, a private, non-profit organization that represents Pennsylvania in the Federal-State Partnership of the National Endowment for the Humanities.  The Pennsylvania Humanities Council inspires individuals to enjoy and share a life of learning.  In addition to the Commonwealth Speakers program, PHC offers grants which support humanities programs centered in the arts, history, literature, and other humanities fields.  PHC's packaged book discussion program for public libraries, Read About It!, also serves as a resource for residents of Pennsylvania.  For more information, visit www.pahumanities.org.

Archaeology and the Bible

Thursday, October 23 * 7:00 PM

Presented by

Dr. Mitchell Rothman, Professor, Widener University

The Bible, Old and New Testaments, stand as the core documents of religious faith in the Judeo-Christian tradition. Archaeologists have long debated how the science of the past can and should be applied to these traditions. This slide lecture discusses the different viewpoints on what archaeology adds to Biblical study, using examples of key stories from the Biblical texts.

This Outreach Lecture Program is funded by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and sponsored by the University of Pennsylvania Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology.
